Learning Support

As in any school, there are children with Special Education Needs who require extra support. At the British School we make every effort to support children’s individual requirements right across the ability spectrum.

For higher ability children, especially in mathematics, we give them extra tuition in small groups to really stretch them.

For lower ability children, we concentrate on literacy. We employ a specialist SEN teacher for three days each week to support the work undertaken by individual class teachers. We monitor children from Reception class because our experience has been that the earlier extra support is introduced, the more effective it is.

We also have a Kick-Start scheme for children who do not have a special need but who may be struggling with reading. This is for children in Years 1 and 2, six children each term get an extra boost with reading which builds their self-confidence and keeps them motivated.

Children with a statement have their own Learning Support Worker who helps them to learn alongside their peers.

At the British School we foster an atmosphere of tolerance and care. Our children are encouraged to be supportive of children with a special need, which we feel is a good grounding for adult life.
